District 9 2019 Umpire Training
Hey, Blue! Snowmageddon has receded, and it’s time to get ready for baseball season! Games start soon, and we've got some training coming up!
This year’s D9 preseason training is much lighter weight—enough to help you knock off some rust and gather a few things to work on during the regular season. We’re working on additional training for the lull right before all-star tournaments start.
As always, anyone is welcome to attend (including managers, board members, and players), but the content is geared at umpires with some experience who want to improve to postseason levels of officiating. If you’re new or newish to umpiring, you should go to training in your local league. Check with your UIC—if your league needs assistance crafting a class, D9 will send help!
Midseason rules questions? You can always find me at drewc@d9ump.org. Please CC your league UIC if possible, so that we can maintain consistency.
Remember: please make all of your mistakes in training! You’ll
learn, others will learn, and you can’t actually create any problems
pre-season!
Thanks in advance for the great work you’re going to do this season for all of our kids!
Classroom Training
60’ Refresher
We’re offering two weeknight sessions. The content will be a game time decision: umpires who show up will be able to select topics from the following menu. Note that this means that some content will be repeated on the two nights, and some will be different, depending on the set of umpires who show up.
Plays at first, to practice positioning, timing and where to focus |
Plays at the plate: how to set up to see the play clearly |
Obstruction and interference: judging who has the right-of-way |
The strike zone: mechanics to see the invisible box |
Basics: fair/foul, catch/no-catch |
Basics: tags and force plays |
Double first base: which one is what one and what one is whose |
Infield fly: how to be prepared and what to look for |
Leaving early: one umpire with two eyes watching three runners |
Timing plays: when a run might not count and how to judge |
Other topics on demand |
All classroom sessions be at the Bellevue Boys
and Girls Club.

90' Training
We’re still providing primary training for 90’ games. If you have some games under your belt and would like to experience the big diamond, come to training and then give a few games a try—they’re a lot of fun! This year, we’ve combined the field and classroom sessions and will do all our work on the field.
